The Shazam - REV9

lurking on our secret frequency...

The Shazam - REV 9

01 - On The Airwaves
02 - Wood And Silver
03 - Okay
04 - Periscope
05 - Month O' Moons
06 - Take Me
07 - Revolution 9

Been listening to The Shazam a lot lately since their new one "Meteor" got here from Not Lame.

In fact I'm listening to that lot more than the new Jason Falkner which got here from CDJapan at about the same time.

And in listening to their older stuff too I realised that I didn't have REV9 as mp3s. So here's a nice fresh 32o rip.

Possibly their weakest album, but the opening track "On The Airwaves" is a real killer.

R.I.P Les Paul

Just got online and found out some bad news, it's a sad day for music. Les Paul has died at the age of 94.

Without him and his inventions music today would NOT be what it is.

Quoting Guitar player's article "10 Things You Gotta Do To Play Like Les Paul"

AS ONE OF THE FOUNDING fathers of the electric guitar, genius inventor and designer—and guitarist par excellence—Les Paul stands as one of our country’s greatest national treasures. A true living legend, Paul’s unparalleled career stretches back to well before the dawn of tape-based recording technology, and it’s safe to say that his influence has touched every guitarist who has since walked the planet. You’ll hear echoes of Paul’s playing in everyone from Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, and Danny Gatton to George Benson, Pat Martino, and Brad Paisley. But it wasn’t only Paul’s playing that cast a wide spell. His inventions literally changed the world.

Sal's Birdland - Nude Photos Inside

I'm so fucking happy my life is a dream...

Sal's Birdland - Nude Photos Inside

01 - Love Is Groovy
02 - I'm Not Like Madonna
03 - Crumble
04 - So Fucking Happy
05 - California Au Revoir
06 - Should Have Been A Man
07 - Wonderful World
08 - Take A Look
09 - Punching Bag
10 - Beating Up Myself
11 - Wanna Be A Star

As I think I mentioned somewhere below I have many boxes of CDs that I rarely listen to. Some are filled with CDs going back 15 years or more that not only have I not listened to, but I can't even remember what the fuck they are or sound like. Or actually having wanted them enough to buy them.

Digging through a box today I came upon this blast from the past. Kind of Alterna-Lite from the mid 90s. With a major label mastering budget to put a million dollar sheen on it and a marketing push this could have been a pretty big commercial success back in the just post grunge era.

A personal connection to this is the fact that the band I was in at the time used to cover one of the two the best song on here - So Fucking Happy - a great ironic lyric and rocking tune to crank out on guitar. Mellow on the verses loud on the chorus, a winning formula.

The other bestest tune is California Au Revoir - ironic and laid back.

Once more into the 80s - B.A. Robertson - Initial Success

B.A. Robertson - Initial Success

01 - Gonzo for My Girlfriend
02 - Man or a Mouse
03 - Goosebumps
04 - Fallin in Luv
05 - Kool In The Kaftan
06 - Bang Bang
07 - Eat Your Heart Out Sandy Nelson
08 - the B Side
09 - To Be Or Not To Be
10 - She's a Beezer
11 - England's Green & Pheasant Land
12 - Walking Rover
13 - Knocked It Off
14 - Here I Sit

First off... not my rip. It's one I've been searching for for a long while. Prior to this I had a crappy 128kbps version from here. But in the comments on Frisian's Other Favorites post of another of Robertson's albums "Bully For You", Anonymous John tracked down a 320kbps vinyl rip.

But couldn't get the download to work. But I did! And cleaned up the track names and did the MP3 tags properly.

So here it is, a real trip back to nostalgia land for me. I can remember when Darren Pennington gave me a taped copy and listening to it on one of this kind of tape player...
...In MONO!!!!

Yes, back then Home Taping was Killing Music kids!!! And we had the fucking technology!!!!

NOT my rip as I've never been able to find a copy of the CD that I could afford!!

I can't remember where I downloaded this, which was my intro to the band, but kudos to the original uploader.

Reissue bonus tracks

13 - Tell Me So
14 - On Green Dolphin Street

The only album by The Reivers that seems to be absent from the blog share universe.

Not their greatest, this third album by the band still has some killer tunes and is true to the band's sound.

This is from the 2002 reissue CD and has 2 bonus tracks.

20090306

The Reivers - Pop Beloved

The Reivers - Pop Beloved

01 - Breathin' Easy
02 - Over And Over

06 - Chinatown

08 - Katie
09 - Other Side

11 - It's All One
12 - Second Chance

Have a search on Totally Fuzzy and find 2 other albums by this excellent band. Namely "Translate Slowly" and the even better "Saturday". This album I'm posting is probably the least good of the three but is still a great album. A band that had found their own sound and played to the strengths of each member.

A nice live recording here at The New Disease too.

08 - Cappuccino
09 - Mother Love

Ha! I knew I had it here somewhere. The problem was always going to be finding it.

If you liked the Smackmelon EP posted below, and at the time of writing a massive 7 of you have downloaded it, then you will enjoy this too. Simple as that. A great little mid 90s alternative album. God knows there were many shittier bands than this who got a whole lot more exposure.

03 - Raymond
04 - HighWire
05 - Facelift
06 - QuestionMark?

Have you got a huge collection of CDs and vinyl? So big that you can actually misplace stuff for decades?

Well here's something I haven't heard in like 15 years. And had forgotten I even owned. And forgotten how good it is. Found it in the classic way, by looking and failing to find something else. Does that ever happen to you as well?

I also have their album "Blue Hour" here somewhere. but of course now I am actively looking for it I'll have a bastard of a job finding it. But if I look for something unrelated... there it will be.

I'll post it as soon as I find it.

This kind of reminds me of Workbook era Bob Mould, mostly because of the vocal melodies and phrasing. Some of the guitar is similar too, crossed with the cleaner end of Dinosaur jr.

Expansive yet grindy. Sweet yet angsty. Pretty damn good. Here's the video of Space Shot.

Frank Portman - King Dork

Something a little different this time. I always used to frown upon audiobooks, a lazy way of doing things I thought. But I got a free one from emusic and I have to say I'm hooked. I get some culture while I'm doing my retarded repetitive job :) I even had to upgrade to a bigger capacity MP3 player to cope with them. Which also give me MORE music to cart around with me :)

This one is my own rip from CD. One of the best books I've ever read. If you're a music fan who was a dork at school this is for you.

Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers his deceased father’s copy of the Salinger classic "The Catcher in the Rye" he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like it’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father’s death and–oddly–reveal the secret to attracting semi-hot girls. Being in a band could possibly be the secret to the girl thing, but good luck finding a drummer who can count to four.

"This book is for you if you're in a band or wish you were, if you loved or hated The Catcher in the Rye, if you like girls or are one, if you've ever spoken Français or Franglais, or if your high school has or had a dumb mascot. Basically, if you are a human being with even a vague grasp of the English language, King Dork will rock your world."
—John Green, author of Looking for Alaska

05 - Young Love
06 - Jane
07 - Take Me Home
08 - Tonight You're Mine
09 - On The Line
10 - Stranger In My Own Town
11 - Going Back

By the time this was released in '92 it's style of music had no chance of commercial success if we're honest here. But, it's still a good album, one of the many that probably flew so far under the radar that it's known only to fans of the band.

The Outfield - Voices Of Babylon

01 - Voices Of Babylon
02 - My Paradise
03 - Part Of Your Life
04 - Shelter Me
05 - The Night Ain't Over
06 - No Point
07 - Taken By Surpirse
08 - Reach Out
09 - Makin' Up
10 - Inside Your Skin

Probably their best album, the one where all the elements that made their sound came together.

TV Eyes - Softcore EP bonus DVD audio rip

Following on from the post below. here's a rip of the audio of the bonus DVD that shipped with the TV Eyes EP "Softcore".

3 tracks

01 - She's A Study
02 - Love To Need
03 - Fascinating

You will notice that it sounds... shit. Which works ok with the visuals where your brain synthesises the whole experience. But here in glorious fuzzy-mono it kinda sucks.

At the time of writing this you can get the EP where I got it from CDJapan for a cheap price.

TV Eyes - 13/05/02 The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Following on from a comment on my post of the TV Eyes album here is a properly tagged and named version of a live recording of them performing the album. I'm sorry but I can't remember where I got the original archive of the 10 tracks from. They were just named and tagged as track01.mp3 to track10.mp3. All credit to the mystery original poster, and thanks to whomsoever recorded it.

Well, here it actually is.

Not awe inspiring fidelity, but if you liked the album you'll like this. It's nice to hear the 3 guys pulling off the album live.

The pictures above are from the bonus DVD from the recently released "Softcore EP" by TV Eyes. More of that in a later post.

Return of the son of the retarded, inbred child of 80s Cheez - Love And Money - All You Need Is...

Love And Money - All you need is...

01 - Candybar Express
02 - River Of People
03 - Twisted
04 - Pain Is A Gun
05 - Love & Money
06 - Dear John
07 - Cheeseburger
08 - You're Beautiful
09 - Temptation Time

Scottish but weirdly transatlantic sounding 8eezCheez this time. I loved the first track off this album - Candybar Express - a great single. That 8eez synth brass and shit with this BIG Billy Squier-esque guitar over the top.

And that pretty much sets the tone for the album, tinkly DX7 stuff, whiteboy soul/funk touches and big arsed distorted guitar and solos over the top. That first single is by far the best thing here, but 8eez nostalgia heads will like the album. And look at that, it comes from a time when 9 tracks was an album! The mind boggles.

Here's the video for Candybar Express. Shitty audio quality but something to watch while you download the album. Check out that gravity defying hairdo!
